Staying in Balance

Treatment Goals Each person's body has a story to tell. I call it a story because to treat someone requires more than looking at a list of symptoms. It requires seeing the person as a whole, in all of his or her complexity. Acupuncture practitioners use the senses to gather information and each individual bit of information is a piece of the story. Only by putting all the pieces together in the correct order, as with a puzzle, does the story begin to unfold.
As I treat each patient I begin a dialogue between the person and myself. Through this dialogue, which includes having the patient fill out an intake form, getting their medical history and palpating their body, their story begins to emerge. With each treatment the dialogue continues. I get feedback by listening to each patient and by feeling changes in their body. This system of feedback insures that treatments are working successfully.
I select points along pathways of energy that flow through the body called meridians. During a treatment, very slender needles are inserted into the selected points. For some people there is a slight pinch as the needles are inserted, but most people experience a feeling of relaxation.
My goal with patients is not only to see their story as clearly as possible, but to enable them to find their place of balance as they are treated and thus come to shift their story to one of health. Some people need just a few treatments to do this. Others, with more chronic conditions, may require a longer course of treatment as they move towards health.
During this time, acupuncture opens the door for exploration into healthier choices about diet, exercise, emotional well-being, work and relationships. I see this as an exciting experience for myself as well as my patients. |
